Honeypot

A honeypot is a decoy system or service designed to attract and detect cyber attackers, much like a baited trap left for a cunning fox. Honeypots are often used by organizations to improve their security measures, as they can reveal information about the attacker's techniques, tools, and motives, helping security teams better understand and defend against threats.

Example

A company sets up a honeypot server, appearing as a vulnerable database with sensitive information. In reality, this database contains fake data and is isolated from the company's actual network. When a cyber attacker attempts to breach the honeypot server, their actions are logged and monitored, providing valuable insights into their methods and intentions. The company's security team can then use this information to strengthen their defenses and prevent similar attacks on their real systems.
